POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 29, 2004) -- Despite a first round defeat at the season-opening Winternationals, Ron Capps and the Skoal Racing green crew posted the fourth quickest elapsed time during the opening round of eliminations at Pomona Raceway.
Capps, who faced off against No. 3 qualifier Tim Wilkerson in the first Funny Car match-up of the day, had a slight starting-line advantage behind the wheel of his John Stewart-tuned Chevy Monte Carlo and powered to a season-best run of 4.803 seconds at 317.79 mph, but was narrowly defeated by Wilkerson's quicker 4.789 at 322.73. Jerry Toliver knocked-off Gary Densham in Sunday's final round.
"Unfortunately, that's what we were trying to run during qualifying on Saturday, but the car struck the tires both times," Capps said. "We knew the car had wanted to run a high 4.7-second pass and it was real close running 4.80 in the first round. The guys are real pleased with the performance.
"Qualifying where we did put us against Wilkerson who is a good runner. I didn't see him near the end of the track and I knew we were on a good run. We're excited about going to Phoenix. We got some good info from Pomona and we'll take that to Phoenix where I've always done well."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 20th annual Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals, March 5-7, at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz.
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the CSK Nationals beginning at 11 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, March 6 and show three hours of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 7.
