Pomona, Calif., Feb. 27, 2003 -- At the K&N Filters Winternationals at Pomona Raceway, 15-time NHRA national event winner and two-time Top Fuel World Champion (1994-1995) Scott Kalitta drove his Mac Tools/Jesse James dragster into the provisional No. 5 qualifying spot Friday with a 4.577-sec., 324.36-mph blast in the second of four qualifying attempts.

Kalitta improved six notches from his 11th place posting from last Thursday's initial qualifying attempt (4.771 sec., 292.96 mph). The event resumed today after persistent rain cancelled the festivities last weekend.

"That was much better," Kalitta said. "We are still not quite where we want to be, but we will take it for now. We have all three of our (Kalitta Motorsports) cars in the top five after two runs, so that's very cool."

Scott's cousin Doug Kalitta (11.408 sec., 78.47 mph), driving the Mac Tools dragster, matched up side-by-side with new teammate David Grubnic (11.564 sec., 75.94 mph) in the Kalitta Air dragster in the second qualifying session, but neither went far when the light went green. Both cars had traction problems almost immediately and made no improvements on their attempts from last week (4.530 sec., 323.35 mph and 4.572* sec., 296.31 mph respectively).

All three Kalitta Motorsports dragsters will take to the track Saturday for two more attempts to improve upon their positions for Sunday's 16-car eliminations field.
