Millican, a native of Drummonds, Tenn., will face former Lehman Racing crew member Brady Kalivoda in the first round of Sunday's finals.
"I think it is extremely funny how things worked out and we're racing against Brady in the first round," said Millican. "He was waiting for me in our pit area when we got back from our last qualifying run and we both had a good laugh about it."
Going into his final qualifying pass, Millican was in the ninth position with an elapsed time of 4.572 at 309.84 mph. He bettered that mark with his second best career elapsed time of 4.510 at 320.81 mph, and briefly held the number one spot until Kalitta's run of 4.484 seconds. [104car_Pomona.jpg]
"I tell you what, our run wasn't too shabby," said Millican. "But man, Doug did that to us about four times last year and slipped that number one qualifying spot out of our hands. We're in a good position for tomorrow though, and I'm hoping to win this race."
In last year's Winternationals, Millican defeated Jim Head and Doug Herbert on the way to his first of three semi-final appearances in 2003, where he lost to Larry Dixon.
Millican, the 2001-2003 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, raced in 12 of the 23 NHRA races in 2003, and finished in 14th place in the NHRA POWERade points standings. He will race in 10-12 NHRA races this season, along with his full IHRA schedule.
Sunday's final eliminations at the Pomona Raceway begin at 11:00 a.m. PT.
