Sitting Fourth on Day One, WJ Aims Even Higher in Pomona

The 2008 POWERade Drag Racing season got underway on Thursday with a single qualifying attempt at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Running in his 29th NHRA season-opener in Pomona, Warren Johnson wasted little time in positioning his GM Performance Parts Pontiac among the best in the ultra-competitive Pro Stock category.

Running in the right-hand lane, Johnson tripped the finish line timers in 6.656 seconds with a track-record tying top speed of 209.04 mph. Although this earned The Professor the provisional fourth position, with three attempts remaining, he immediately started working on moving up the qualifying order.

"It was a good run, but we were just a little off in a couple areas. At this point, I believe our GM Performance Parts Pontiac is as good as any car out there power-wise, but we just didn't manage it very well on that run.

"However, given the fact that we've just recently gotten to this power level, we were a little cautious with our approach. After all, we wanted to make sure we got down the track and in the field. As a result, we left quite a bit on the table, just as I am sure many of our competitors did. Now it is just a matter of taking what we have and working from there."
