SCHUMACHER DROPS INTO SEVENTH SPOT

POMONA, Calif., February 11 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher grabbed the seventh starting spot here Thursday following the first day of qualifying for the 50th annual Kragen O'Reilly Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway.

In his opening pass of the 2010 season, Schumacher posted an engine-expiring 4.056- second pass at 206.99 mph. Despite the mechanical issues, his time was still good enough for a top half of the field position.

"Man, we had a terrific run going to about the 660-foot mark and then it all broke loose," said the defending world champion. "We'll get it fixed up and come back strong tomorrow." Schumacher has another single qualifying session on Friday before finishing up on Saturday with two more qualifying sessions.

"We have plenty of opportunities to improve before Sunday," added the Chicago-area resident. "We're pumped up to get the new year off on a good note."

A two-time Winternationals event champion, Schumacher is looking to notch his seventh straight title and the eighth of his career. Last year, he edged out Larry Dixon by two points for the crown.

"It's going to be another great battle this season among a bunch of teams," he said. "Everyone talks about how Larry and I will fight it out again for the championship, but there are a lot of other quality teams out here who can make your life miserable. We're going to have to be on our game from this point on if we're going to be in contention."
