Schumacher jumps to fifth after solid run

Pomona, CA (February 4): Slightly overcast skies and cooler temperatures meant that fans could expect to see much quicker times as day two of qualifying for the 40th Annual AutoZone WinterNationals began. Tony Schumacher and the Exide Batteries team were no exception as they stepped up to championship form and moved to the fifth qualifying position.

Schumacher was once again paired against former Champion, Gary Scelzi, and both showed those in the staging lanes that the track was ready to run. Schumacher's car trailed Scelzi at half track, but he was running him down as the cars finished the quarter mile. Schumacher's 4.680 ET at 319.98 MPH moved Team Exide solidly into the field.

"The car was soft to half track," said Schumacher, "but it was really pulling hard at the top end. If we would have had five more feet, I could have caught him."

Of course, since it was only qualifying, there was no winner; though Schumacher loves to run the two-time former Champion. Scelzi's pass was good enough to give him the number one spot with two more chances for Schumacher to better his effort on Saturday.

"We just need to tweak the tune-up for the first half and we will be in good shape for Sunday," said Schumacher while signing autographs back in his pit area.

Saturday will end qualifying for The AutoZone WinterNationals as the pro classes will have two more scheduled sessions. Sunday's eliminations are scheduled to start at 11am.
