JOHNSON JR. POSTS SOLID OPENING PASS AT WINTERNATIONALS, BUT SUFFERS DISQUALIFICATION

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2006) -- Defending Winternationals winner Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy flopper to a strong opening pass to kick-off qualifying Thursday at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, but the run was disqualified when Robert Hight's Funny Car hit the timing cones near the finish line.

Both drivers were on good runs until Hight's car drifted towards the centerline and clipped the timing cones. A time of 4.800 seconds at 285.77 mph came on the board in Johnson's lane, but NHRA officials were forced to throw out both driver's elapsed times. Johnson sits 18th in the Funny Car order with three qualifying attempts remaining.

"It wasn't a perfect run, we had some problems prior to the pass, but it wasn't a bad pass," Johnson said. "It's unfortunate that the timing system is the way it is because he took the cones out. That's the way it goes. Hopefully, we got all of our back luck behind us today. I'm confident we can go out and run a 4.75 tomorrow. It will be cooler and Mike (Green) has a really good tune-up in the car."

Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing team look to make a solid run and get in the 16-car field when qualifying resumes at 2:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday afternoon at the historic Pomona quarter mile. The six-time NHRA winner broke an 89-race winless drought last February when he won the 2005 NHRA season-opener.
