Martino stays consistent, slots 9th at Pomona qualifying midpoint

Date: Friday, February 8, 2002
Location: Pomona Raceway, Pomona, CA

For the second weekend in a row, Tom Martino was one of the quickest and most consistent performers in the Pro Stock division. On his second qualifying attempt for the K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals, Martino came within six thousandths of a second of his opening effort, as he covered the Pomona quarter-mile in 6.855-seconds, with a top speed of 201.88 mph. However, Thursday's 6.849-second elapsed time remained his run of record, placing the Jesel Motorsports Grand Am 9th midway through time trials for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season opener.

"Although the elapsed time was competitive, that run wasn't quite what we were looking for. We had hoped to pick it up a bit and solidify our spot in the top half of the field. Instead, a couple of guys were able to sneak around us. The good news is that we've made two solid runs with our Jesel Motorsports Grand Am, and you're always happy to have a consistently fast race car. We'll use tomorrow's runs to fine tune it and put ourselves back near the top, as well as getting ready for Sunday's eliminations."
