POMONA, CA (Jan. 30) - When the NHRA launches its 50th Anniversary season this weekend with the 41st Annual Autozone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway (Feb. 1-4), Miller Lite Dragster pilot Larry Dixon will not be the only Dixon on hand to celebrate the historic occasion.
This weekend's race, the first of 24 events during the 2001 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series, will feature many special events documenting this landmark season in drag racing. One of the events will be a special pre-race parade in which Larry Dixon, Sr. will be among those honored, along with the fully restored Howard Cam's Rattler, a car that he drove to the 1969 low elapsed time record.
A third generation of Dixons will also be represented as Donovan Joseph Dixon (born Nov. 29, 2000) will get his first taste of nitro fumes and tire smoke with his first trip to the quarter-mile racetrack.
"Personally, I am very excited about coming to Pomona this year," said Dixon. "My dad is going to be a part of the pre-race activities along with the car he set low e.t. in back in 1969 which is fully running, so I am excited about seeing him."
Much the same way that Dixon Sr. brought his son to the track to watch him race, Dixon Jr. is carrying on that tradition for the first time this weekend. "It's neat taking Donovan anywhere we go, so it will also be neat to bring him out to the track for the first time now that he is on the outside!," Dixon joked.
"I have been talking to Gary Scelzi a lot lately about tune-ups, but not the kind of tune-ups that you would think. I have been asking him about what it's like having your son out at the track and what kinds of things I should do. Ali (wife) has not been out to a race since Memphis, so having everyone there will be something that I am looking forward to."
As for action on the track, Don Prudhomme's Top Fuel driver has a pretty good feeling about his chances this weekend. "I am definitely more confident going into this race than I was last year," admits Dixon. "We did not have to make any major changes over the off season. During testing we were able to refine what we did last year while trying to improve ourselves and I think that we will have a better package to show off. Last year everyone thought that you would need to go to the semi finals each race in order to win the Winston Championship. Well, we pretty much did that but still fell way short. For us to be able to put that #1 plate on the side of the car, we are going to have to raise the bar and that won't be easy, but I think out Miller Lite Team will be ready to rise to the challenge."
