Collins cars make their first passes of the year
POMONA, Calif. (Feb 5) - Under cloudy skies and dodging rain showers for most of the day, the Collins Racing Pontiacs had a mediocre day of qualifying at the 39th Annual AutoZone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. Armed with new paint schemes and a new sponsor - Valspar Refinish - the Collins Racing team was hoping for better runs in the opening session.
Here's a rundown of each driver's Round 1 lap.
Richie "The Kid" Stevens, the first of the Collins Racing Valspar Refinish Pontiacs to go out for qualifying, had a less than spectacular first round. Stevens ran 7.029 seconds at 196.30 mph, which left him in the 15th spot.
"I took off from the line and once I hit second gear the car started shaking the tires pretty bad," Stevens said. "We just over-powered the track. At least we got a run in today so we have a baseline to work from and hopefully, the weather will clear up tomorrow and we'll be able to get faster and straighter."
Shawn Collins, driver of the No. 1 Collins Racing Pontiacs, had to wait for a brief drizzling of rain to cease before he was able to qualify. Collins made a 7.043-second pass at 197.02 mph, which left him in the 17th spot.
"I had no shift light in second gear," Collins said, "I blew the tires off the back of the car and it started shaking. The car seemed to go pretty straight, like Richie we just over-powered the track. But we have a solid baseline for tomorrow, so that's a start. We'll be fine."
