Entering the final day of qualifying for the 41st annual AutoZone Winternationals, Century 21 Pro Stock pilot Tom Martino, was looking to not only improve his position for Sunday's final eliminations, but also to gather additional data on his new Grand Am. However, with higher temperatures greeting the Pro Stock competitors on Saturday, there was no movement among the top sixteen, with no one able to better their previous time. In the afternoon session, Martino was deprived of any additional information, as a mechanical malfunction stalled his racecar at the line.

Therefore, Martino's best effort was his 6.893-second, 200.14 mph pass from Friday's second session slotted the New Jersey native 14th for Sunday's final eliminations at Pomona Raceway. Martino will face No. 3 qualifier Ron Krisher in the first round.

"As part of our continued fight to learn the performance characteristics of our Century 21 Grand Am we made some changes going into the final qualifying session seeing if we could improve. Unfortunately, we broke the two-step shifter right at the line, so we were unable to make the run. Not having that information will make our job that much more difficult tomorrow.

"We face Ron Krisher in the first round tomorrow, and we know he is going to be tough. Unfortunately, we will also have to deal with running in the bad lane. It will take a great light and an equally good run to get by him, but I think we're capable of getting the job done."
