White looking for big things in Pomona
POMONA, Calif. - Just one week after suffering a disappointing second round loss in Las Vegas that cost him the Division 3 Championship, NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car driver Marc White and the Etterman Racing Team will be looking for redemption during this weekend's AAA Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Etterman Racing 2001 Firebird first last weekend in Vegas, but lost in the second round to Doug Gordon, which clinched the Division 3 Championship for Chuck Cheeseman. Nonetheless, White still wants to finish the year strong and hopes to finish in the top five; he is currently seventh.
"We went out there [Las Vegas] chasing an altitude tune-up," said White. "We were pretty happy with what the car ran, it ran a 5.72 at 249 mph. On Sunday, the conditions changed a little bit and we got behind the racetrack. Doug Gordon is one of the better drivers in the country, he put a holeshot on me, and we went home. That was pretty much the end of that. We were pretty disappointed with our performance out there; we just didn't get the job done. Congratulations to Chuck Cheeseman and his crew for winning Division 3. We'll just go after it again next year."
"We're definitely going to go to Pomona and be aggressive," White added. "We have a few things that we have always wanted to try and have never been in a position to do it, so this may be a good weekend to do it. We're really going out there to have a good time and race our hot rod."
White predicts it will once again take low 5.70's and 5.60's to be competitive in Pomona.
"I think you will probably see some high 5.60's, low 5.70's," stated White. "Those will probably be the numbers you need to have to be competitive. From what I've heard, they have redone the racetrack out there, and it's as smooth as glass. So, it should be a place where we can go real fast just like everybody else, so we'll give it all we have."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Funny Cars, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest in Federal Mogul racing news.
