POMONA, CA. (Feb. 6) -Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster put together wins over Bobby Baldwin and Kenny Bernstein before recording a semi-final finish to Gary Scelzi at the 40th Annual Autozone Winternationals.
By reaching the final four in the top fuel category, Dixon leaves the first event of the season sitting in fourth place in the Winston standings with 76 points. The semi-final finish breaks Dixon's streak of final round appearances after winning the event in 1998 and finishing as runner up in 1999.
The No. 3-seeded Dixon began the day with a win over the red-lighting Bobby Baldwin to advance to the second round where he met Kenny Bernstein. Dixon's quick reaction time proved to be the difference in the second round duel as he posted the holeshot win to reach the semis. Scelzi would go on to win the Winternationals top fuel crown and first place in the standings with 117 points.
"While I am disappointed that we were not able to win the race, I'm excited about the way Dick LaHaie has the Miller Lite car running," said Dixon. "With the exception of the second round today (4.91), we had a really consistent car with six out of our seven runs this weekend between 4.65 and 4.74 seconds. I'm pretty confident that LaHaie will look at the numbers and have an even more competitive car ready in time for Phoenix."
The Miller Lite Team takes two weeks off before returning to action Feb. 24-27 at the 16th Annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals in Phoenix.
