LARRY DIXON QUALIFIES MILLER LITE TOP FUEL DRAGSTER IN 14th POSITION AT THE NHRA WORLD FINALS IN POMONA
POMONA, CA. (Nov. 13) - Larry Dixon's best qualifying lap of 4.718 seconds at 297.48 mph set on Friday proved to be his best as the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster claimed the No. 14 position for Sunday's elimination round at the 35th Annual AAA Auto Club of Southern California NHRA World Finals on Saturday.
The Miller Lite Team's first pass of the day, which also served as the opening round of the $100,000 top fuel Exhibition Shootout, saw Dixon pilot his ride to a lap of 4.799 seconds at 288.46 mph. Dixon's opponent, 1999 NHRA Winston Top Fuel Champ Tony Schumacher, recorded a time of 4.636 at 314.90 to advance to the second round. Gary Scelzi won the event.
Dixon's next and final qualifying attempt saw him shut off early and cruise to a time of 5.60 seconds at 159.74 mph. His 14th qualifying position results in Dixon meeting Mike Dunn on the first round of Sunday's eliminations scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday. Dixon owns a mark of 1 win and 2 setbacks against Dunn for the season, including a runner-up finish to the Mopar car at the Winternationals, also held in Pomona (Feb. 4-7, 1999). For his career, Dixon has seven wins in 21 career meetings with Dunn.
For the season, Dixon qualified the Miller Lite Dragster on the pole on three consecutive occasions (Gainesville, Houston, Dallas) and has recorded two wins (Brainerd, Houston) in four final round appearances. He was the first driver to break the 4.5-second barrier (4.486 seconds) during qualifying in Houston (April, 9). Dixon has eight NHRA national event wins in 18 career final round appearances and was the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year.
