POMONA, CA. (Nov. 12) - Larry Dixon's second qualifying effort at this weekend's 35th Annual AAA of Southern California NHRA World Finals Friday saw the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster pick up four thousandths of a second to improve from 12th to tenth overall in the 22-car top fuel field with a pass of 4.718 seconds at 297.48 mph.

"I'm not sure what exactly happened," said Dixon. "We will have a better idea of what is going on once Dick (LaHaie) has a look at the computer and we sit down and talk about the run."

Dixon is one day closer to Saturday's $100,000 Exhibition Shootout which will see him take on the 1999 Winston Top Fuel Champ Tony Schumacher in the first round. Defending top fuel champ Gary Scelzi took the pole at Pomona with a lap of 4.570 seconds at 322.11 mph.

Dixon has qualified the Miller Lite Dragster on the pole on three occasions this season (Gainesville, Houston, Dallas) and ranks No. 4 among the best qualifying top fuel cars this season.

He has recorded two wins (Brainerd, Houston) in four final round appearances this season and was the first driver to break the 4.5-second barrier (4.486 seconds). Dixon has eight NHRA national event wins in 18 final round appearances and was the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year.
