POMONA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2008 -- Justin Humphreys got his wish of a rematch against Jeg Coughlin Sunday at Pomona Raceway. The last time they met was in November in the final round of the season-ending Auto Club Finals, and Coughlin won by seven-thousandths of a second.

This time it was the season-opening Winternationals and Humphreys had lane choice on a warm winter afternoon. But a quirk of fate prevented the Monrovia, Md., driver from getting revenge. A "two-step switch" that determines the rpm level at the hit of the throttle accidentally was moved from 1/100 to 1/1000.

"That slows everything down," said Humphreys. "It tells the clutch what to do so it threw off the tune-up."

The result was a slow start and Humphreys was never able to catch up. He had a uncharacteristic .047-second reaction time to Coughlin's .027 and stopped the clock at 6.724 seconds at 207.15 mph to Coughlin's 6.685 at 207.27.

"We threw the 'chutes in the car (after the first run) and when they were pulled out, one apparently caught the switch and flipped the dial," added Humphreys. "It was weird. We are going to move it before our next race."

Humphreys began the day in fine fashion, using a .020 reaction and a 6.657 at 207.56 mph to oust V Gaines' 6.701 at 206.80.

"The good thing is we have 23 more races this year," he concluded.
