Yates Enthused with First-race Qualifying Results

POMONA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2006 -- Jim Yates carries an optimistic approach into Sunday's season-opening NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Track at Pomona. The impetus came from a 6.714-second, 205.79-mph performance from his B&W/Bayshore Power Pontiac GTO in Saturday's last qualifying session.

The result put him 13th in Sunday's starting line-up and pits him against Larry Morgan (No. 4, 6.680 at 206.92 mph).

This was the first national event for Yates and legendary engine builder Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. Yates, a two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion, and Jenkins, a drag racing hall of fame member, began working together during preseason testing. "We picked up in that last session and I'm enthused with the opportunity we have right now," said Yates. "We had been testing on 70-to-80-degree race tracks and now we're at a national event we find ourselves trying to tame the horsepower. It caught us off guard. We were trying different set-ups and we didn't want to come here a experiment.

"We're thankful that the last one was the best one. We want to improve on that Sunday. If we do, we should be able to beat some cars" in eliminations.
