Larry Dixon & Miller Lite Top Fuel Team Complete Career-Best Season As They Enter Pomona Looking For First NHRA Top Fuel Championship
POMONA, CA (Nov. 6) - After months of hard-fought racing on the finest quarter-mile drag strips across the USA, the 2001 NHRA Winston Top Fuel Championship will be decided at Pomona this weekend, the same place where the season-long points race began nearly a year ago.
Entering this weekend's NHRA-finale 37th Annual AAA of Southern California Auto Club Nationals (Nov. 8-11), Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme Racing's Miller Lite Top Fuel Team see their most successful season in history come to a close. Dixon winds down his seventh season as a professional driver - a season in which he has truly evolved from a talented young gun to an experienced veteran pilot.
Prior to 2001, Dixon's best finish in the points race had been third, a position he held following his 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year effort and duplicated again at the end of 2000. This season the Indianapolis transplant from Southern California is a lock to finish no lower than second in the standings as he sits just 54 points out of the lead. Dixon's six wins in nine final rounds are both single-season career bests, as are his four top qualifier awards. In 2001, he tasted victory for the first time at tracks like Columbus, Denver and Dallas, but it was his second career win at the Mac Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indy that proved to mean the most.
"We won Indy this year and that's a big deal," said Dixon.
"But no matter what happens with this points race, I won't let it spoil my season. We won six events so far and up until last year when Gary Scelzi won nine, no one had ever won more than six," said Dixon.
"We have had a strong year and we have just got to try and make it seven wins this weekend. We can't really afford to change our strategy. What it came down to going into the last three races, we were less than three rounds out, so if we won all three races and Kenny (Bernstein) went to the finals of all three, it wouldn't matter because we would pass him and we would have the points title. Well, we did well at Dallas, but didn't get it done in Las Vegas, so now we are relying on him to have some bad luck at Pomona for us to even have a shot. But we still have to go out and win."
"We can't really control anything that goes on with them," said Dixon, "we can just try to go into the last race to try and win and see what happens." <pre> Larry Dixon's Career Results in Pomona
