Martino slots 13th for NHRA season finale in Pomona

Date: Saturday, November 10, 2001
Location: Pomona Raceway, Pomona, CA

With Saturday's temperatures proving to be much cooler than those encountered during the first two days of qualifying, CENTURY 21 Grand Am pilot Tom Martino knew that despite having recorded on one the quickest times in the Pro Stock ranks on Friday, improvement would be necessary to guarantee a position in final eliminations. Martino responded with two solid runs, each quicker than the last. On his final attempt, he recorded his best time of 6.878 seconds, which came with a top speed of 201.37 mph. This earned the Farmingdale, NJ native the 13th starting position, and set the stage for a first-round encounter with No. 4 qualifier George Marnell.

"Today was a major disappointment for the whole team. On that last run, we should have been able to run a low 6.86, but we missed the set-up on the starting line. We had tried a different gear ratio this morning and the car obviously didn't like it, so we changed it back to what we ran the last two days, and adjusted from there. To be honest, we should have left the original combination in and tuned off of that. Even so, we had the second fastest speed this morning and another 201-mph run this afternoon.

"The best part is that the lanes are pretty even. Although the left side has definite advantage, you can win from the right. We don't have lane choice for the first round, but hopefully I'll bust one off, get lane choice and keep it for the rest of the day.

"Tomorrow will be our last ride with CENTURY 21 and Winston, and we'd definitely like to give them a day to remember."
