SCHUMACHER SECURES NUMBER ONE SPOT

POMONA, Calif., November 14 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher swiped the number one starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the Auto Club Finals at Auto Club Raceway.

Schumacher laid down a near record 3.772-second pass at 320.58 mph during the fourth session and in the process knocked Larry Dixon from the top spot in the race day order.

"That was an incredible effort by the entire U.S. Army team," said the six-time world champion. "We had to step up to the plate and swing for the fences. Fortunately, we connected for a home run."

Schumacher's effort pushed him back into the Top Fuel points lead heading into the season finale on Sunday. He has a slight two-point advantage over Dixon.

"It's still very much the battle we all anticipated," he added. "I'm sure the fans are going to get their money's worth tomorrow."

In the opening round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. PT, Schumacher will square off with 16th-place qualifier Mike Strasburg, while Dixon will take on 15th-place qualifier Del Cox Jr.

"We'll both have to be focused," said Schumacher. "Neither one of us can afford to look beyond round one."

Schumacher, who is attempting to win his sixth consecutive title and the seventh of his career, collected his second pole of the season. It was the 58th of his career.

"We haven't been number one for a while (the first was at Englishtown, N.J. in June), but if there was ever a time to get back up there it was today," he said. "We needed this kind of performance for so many reasons. I feel good about where we're at going into tomorrow."
