SCHUMACHER DROPS TO THIRD
POMONA, Calif., November 13 - Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, who handles the controls of the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, was bumped down to third in the starting order here today after the second round of qualifying for the Auto Club Finals at Auto Club Raceway.
Schumacher, who started the day holding the number one spot, could not get down the track cleanly and as a result fell in behind Larry Dixon and Spencer Massey, respectively.
With Dixon collecting three bonus points and Schumacher being shut out for the session, the former now leads the Top Fuel standings by one point going into the last two rounds of qualifying on Saturday.
"It's going back and forth for sure," said Schumacher. "But, I think everyone kind of expected that to happen during qualifying. We'll see what we can do tomorrow to change things."
Schumacher posted a quick 3.832-second pass on Thursday which was good enough for the provisional pole, but on Friday it was a far different story. The rear tires on the U.S. Army dragster broke loose at about half track and he slowed to a 5.255- second trip.
"We had her loaded up to lay down a good number," added the six-time world champion. "However, the track just wouldn't hold it. I said coming into this race we're going to go for broke every run and that was a prime example right there. We'll figure it all out and come back prepared tomorrow."
Schumacher has recorded one pole this season - at Englishtown, N.J. in June. He has 57 career poles to his credit.
