POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. saved his best for last as the veteran nitro driver blasted his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the quickest and fastest run of his career Saturday at Pomona Raceway.

Johnson, who began qualifying at the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals with a 4.777-second pass on Thursday, bested his opening effort by using a Mike Green tune-up to stop the Pomona Raceway timers in 4.759 seconds at 326.79 to earn the seventh qualifying position. It was the quickest and fastest pass of Johnson's 18-year professional driving career. The five-time NHRA winner's previous career-bests were 4.762 seconds (Top Fuel) at Topeka, Kan. in 1995 and 324.90 mph (Funny Car) at Madison, Ill. in June.

"I'm really happy with the way the car performed on that final run," Johnson said. "We came out of the box on Thursday with a 4.777 and I knew we were close to making a really good pass. We had great conditions tonight and it ran a 4.75. Hopefully we can use this and end the season on a high note."

Johnson will do battle with No. 10 qualifier Whit Bazemore in the first round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Johnson is 7-12 in his career against Bazemore.
