JOHNSON JR. SITS 10TH AT POMONA WITH TWO SESSIONS REMANING

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2005) - With two qualifying sessions in the book at the 2005 NHRA season-finale, six-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. positioned his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo in the No. 10 qualifying spot Friday at Pomona Raceway.

The veteran nitromethane pilot opened qualifying at the historic drag strip with a 4.795, 321.81 effort on Thursday afternoon. The Skoal Racing team came back and missed the tune-up on Friday's only qualifying attempt as Johnson's flopper shook the tires and slowed to a 9.657-second pass.

"With today's conditions, we had to go for it," Johnson said. "We were shooting for a 4.69 or 4.70 and it was just too aggressive for the track conditions. There were some bald spots and the tune-up was too aggressive for that. It will be cool again on Saturday, so I'm confident that we'll run good and move up in the field."

Professional qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. (PT) on Saturday at Pomona Raceway. Johnson won the Winternationals at Pomona in February.
