SKULL Shine/Torco Racing Fuels Teammates Off to Good Start
POMONA, Calif., Nov. 9, 2006 -- Neither J.R. Todd nor Steve Torrence took the most direct route down the Auto Club Track at Pomona quarter-mile racing surface Thursday, but each Top Fuel driver wound up among the top 16 after the opening round of qualifying for Sunday's Auto Club Finals.
Todd's SKULL Shine/Torco Racing Fuels dragster posted a time of 4.565 seconds at 313.15 mph to grab the seventh berth while Torrence's run in an identically-prepared car stopped the clock in 4.599 seconds at 318.92 mph and put him 12th in the 16-car field.
"We were glad it went down the track," said Todd, of Lawrenceburg, Ind. "We should be all right. The car was running better than the 4.565 but the engine dropped a couple cylinders near the finish line. The car moved around a little (on the track) and that slowed us a little, too."
Torrence, of Kilgore, Texas, took a giant step toward qualifying for his third consecutive event since stepping into the SKULL Shine dragster at Richmond, Va., last month.
"The car pulled me out of the groove and I just stayed in (the throttle)," Torrence recalled. "It moved around, but it was a good pass. One thing we learned was that sun on the track is a definite factor to deal with when tuning the car. We're looking forward to coming back tomorrow and making a better run."
One qualifying run is slated Friday, followed by two more on Saturday that will set the 16-car line-up for Sunday's eliminations.
