IN A NAIL-BITER, CAPPS PULLS OUT NO. 11 IN POMONA FINALS QUALIFYING
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2010) - Racing the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car, Ron Capps pulled out a 4.176-second run at 290.32 mph early in the final qualifying session for the 46th annual NHRA Finals, to place him No. 11 in the field for Sunday's eliminations.
Just before he lined up for that final round, Capps had been bumped out of the field. His previous laps included a 7.119/86.47 (No. 14), a 6.438/98.77 (No. 16), and a 4.437/250.88 (No. 14).
"It is a nail-biter whenever you're put in a situation where you're two cars back in the staging lanes and the guys on the radio are giving you the update of what's going on in front of you and you get bumped out," said Capps, No. 7 in the points, who is tied with Tony Pedregon with the longest qualifying streak among active Funny Car drivers (86). "And when you're not in the show in the last run you start hearing things, the car sounds funny, there's a lot of things that go on in your head, and it can really play havoc with you.
"That's when a great team shines, because everybody just needs to calm down and do what they do. That's the reason they get to work on a team like this, because they're the best of the best. So, it's a little bit of a calming effect on me as a driver, but I'll tell you it was just a nail-biter. With the sun where it was at that time of the day - it's right behind the tree - it was hard to see. It was just very difficult.
"So, the car went out and made a great run. For that time of the day, to be that early in the pairings and run a 4.17 was just a great job by (crew chief) John Medlen and (assistant crew chief) Ronnie Thompson.
"We're hoping to help our Don Schumacher Racing teammate Matt Hagan (points leader and battling it out for the crown with John Force) any way we can tomorrow. As a fan myself, it's going to be a fun day tomorrow."
Capps faces Del Worsham in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
