Monster runs lift GEICO racers Lucas and Stoffer to contender status
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13) -- GEICO Powersports drag racers Morgan Lucas and Karen Stoffer both saved their best passes of the weekend for the final round of professional qualifying Saturday and simultaneously vaulted themselves into title contention at the 46th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals.
Just a race and a half into new crew chief Dickie Venables tenure at the helm of the GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, Lucas already looks like a force in the field, blasting up the rankings with a stout 3.829-second run at 317.49 mph to earn the No. 4 slot.
Prior to Lucas' big run, Stoffer found her own quick path down the track on her GEICO Powersports Suzuki, taking third place in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.861 seconds at 196.10 mph.J
"That was probably the best-feeling run we've made all year," Lucas said. "It's pretty gratifying to see all the hard work the guys have been putting in for so long finally pay off.
"I'm really happy. We have the best combination of people we've had all year. It's great for me to have so much confidence in the team. I know it's only one run but it's awesome. Just knowing we qualified was big but when I saw the number I was blown away.
"Hey, anything is possible on race day. That's the way to look at it now."
Stoffer's strong showing sets her up with a first-round tilt against No. 14 qualifier Bailey Whitaker, who had a best lap of 7.009 seconds at 190.78 mph.
"We've been looking for that mile per hour and it looks like we finally found it," Stoffer said. "I was kind of surprised since we've been struggling lately. That was just a fun pass. When the bike runs that good, it's such a great feeling. We went back to the very first baseline tune-up we used this year and that's what gave us that great run. We're glad we had the chance to throw that number on the board.
"We came to this race with the intention of testing for next season. We know we can't do much in the points but we knew we could prepare for next season and try to win some rounds on race day. Now it looks like the GEICO Powersports Suzuki is back and it's not too late to get a win in the books for 2010."
