DIXON TURNS IN FIRST QUALIFYING PASS OF THE 2006 SEASON FINALE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 9, 2006) -- Larry Dixon drove the Miller Lite dragster to the No. 9 position Thursday at the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.
Dixon recorded a 4.568-second pass at 327.90 mph in his Top Fuel dragster in the first of four qualifying sessions that will wrap up on Saturday.
The Van Nuys, Calif., native said he was pleased with the first pass of the season finale NHRA event.
"The car went right down the track and that was a good thing," Dixon said. "We had a fairly soft setup just to be sure we got down the race track. We ran a 4.56 and all the parts and pieces look really good so know we know we can start picking up the pace from there."
Dixon, a two-time NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion, has earned three wins in five final rounds at Pomona Raceway. He said the track has already proven the capability to hold quicker times.
"Tony Schumacher went out and ran a 4.49 which tells us the track is good enough to support running in the 4.40s. That's what we will start working toward (Friday).
"The weather is going to be good and it's already been a great crowd. The people are hungry for some nitro-burning cars and it makes you feel good to come home to the place where you grew up and see a lot of people out here."
Professional qualifying continues at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and wraps up at noon and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Final eliminations for the 23rd of 23 NHRA POWERade events will start at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
All the action at the Auto Club Finals can be seen on ESPN2 starting Saturday with two hours of coverage at 10 p.m. (ET), continuing with three hours of final eliminations on Sunday at 7 p.m. (ET).
