POMONA, Calif. (Nov.6) --POWERade NHRA Champion Larry Dixon earned the No. 2 qualified position Thursday at the 39th Annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway (Nov. 6-9th). Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to a 4.539-second run at a speed of 326.87 mph after the first and only qualifying session of the day.

The Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster paired against Doug Kalitta and his Mac Tools machine but Kalitta smoked the tires mid-track and Dixon drove for the win. Dixon produced a time of 4.539-seconds at 326.87 mph to Kalitta's 7.610-second lap at 121.73 mph.

"We didn't go up there just trying to qualify," said LaHaie, "we went up there trying to get a decent baseline. The problem is a lot of things can change."

One thing LaHaie is looking to change is NHRA history. "There's $100,000 on the line Saturday and we have the opportunity to become the only team in the history of the sport to win the Shootout twice in one year."

Dixon began his second championship season in Pomona with a vengeance, winning both the Winternationals and the $100,000 Top Fuel Shootout. The win in February marked Dixon's third career win in front of his hometown fans (1998, 2002, 03'). The Don Prudhomme driver would like to finish the year just as he started, winning the Top Fuel Shootout and earning a win on Sunday.

Although Dixon has won a handful of Winternational titles, both he and LaHaie have yet to win at the Pomona World Finals. "Last year we only had one qualifying run going into the Sunday," recalls Dixon, "and we smoked the tires the first round."

The 39th Annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals continues tomorrow with one round of qualifying at 3:00 PM. Qualifying continues on Saturday with two sessions at 12:15 and 3:30 PM, preceded by the $100,000 Top Fuel Shootout beginning at noon.
