Midway through Pomona Qualifying, KJ Sits Seventh

Kurt Johnson entered the second day of qualifying at the Auto Club NHRA Finals looking to fine-tune the set-up on his ACDelco Cobalt and improve his performance. Making calculated changes based on the analysis of his opening attempt from Thursday, Johnson made another solid, straight run down the track at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, tripping the finish line timers in 6.709 seconds with a top speed of 206.16 mph, placing him in the seventh position midway through the qualifying procedure.

"Our ACDelco Cobalt made a nice, clean, straight-as-an-arrow run, which is certainly good. In fact, I got out at the top end thinking it had made a perfect run, and even though it picked up a bit, the numbers just didn't match up. For some reason, it ran decent to the eighth mile, but just didn't want to run the back half. I know we took some gas away from it, which looked like it slowed it down a bit, but we have to get the whole picture. We'll take some time to decipher the data, and see what we need to do to fix it.

"It's important that we make the right call for tomorrow morning's session, because the conditions will be the best that they will be throughout qualifying. It's going to be fast, and I figure we'll have to run a 6.68 just to stay in the top half of the field. We need to make sure to do that so we can keep lane choice for Sunday. We've been able to run down both lanes, so it's not that big of an issue, but it's still something you'd like to have going into eliminations. The bottom line is that we have to run as fast as we can, and we'll be all right."
