BECKMAN PLACES FOURTH IN 2010 NHRA FUNNY CAR SEASON
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2010) - Jack Beckman completed the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season in fourth place in the Funny Car standings, after his first-round finish today at the 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.
Piloting the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger, Beckman (third in the standings at the start of eliminations) was snookered by Bob Bode in the opening stanza, when Bode clicked off a .013-of-a-second reaction time to Beckman's more-than-respectable .101. It resulted in a hole shot win for Bode, who posted a 4.200-second pass at 299.46 mph to Beckman's quicker but losing 4.146/306.60. Ashley Force Hood, who entered the event in fourth place, moved past Beckman into third following her first-round win.
"It stings bad," said Beckman, who qualified seventh for the event. "We had a good car that responded well this weekend to all the changes. We had a better car in eliminations. My reaction time was right between the two I had in that lane in qualifying.
"I don't know that we could have done a better job, and we lost. And that's a tough pill to swallow. You can't beat a 'guess.' I love Bob Bode and have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Bob will be the first to tell you that he took a shot at the tree and it came up green. And it's just tough to get around something like that.
"So, the philosophical side is, we were tough everywhere. We're going to win nearly every one of the races where we take that kind of car and performance up to the starting line. So, let's start testing for next season.
"A top-five finish in nitro Funny Car is outstanding. Don Schumacher pays us to put a No. 1 on the car. We made five final rounds this year, and we won one. I don't think we achieved our potential this year. I think this car should have been in three or more winner's circles this year. But I also think that we're maturing. We had a lot of changes in the off-season. For Rahn (Tobler, crew chief) this is all brand new. We maintained some team members from last year, brought new ones in. If we can carry everybody over to next year and maintain this sort of performance, camaraderie and ability to take a strong car up there, we're going to again contend for the championship."
Beckman ended the 2010 NHRA season with one win in five final rounds, six semifinal and eight quarterfinal finishes, and one No. 1 qualifier. His season round-win record is 36-22. In the 110 national events he's run, he's won nine times in 22 final rounds, reached the semifinals 15 times and the quarterfinals 29 times. He's qualified No. 1 three times and has a career round-win record of 134-97.
