Herbert improves time at Pomona Raceway
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2005) -- Doug Herbert improved his qualifying time Friday at the 41st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.
Herbert drove his Snap-on Tools/Doug Herbert Performance Parts dragster to a 4.537-second pass at 321.19 mph. The time was good enough for the No. 5 spot.
"Unfortunately, we weren't the only team to go quicker today, so we didn't move up the qualifying ladder," Herbert said. "But we have two more sessions tomorrow and the important thing is that we did go quicker. We turned in the second-quickest pass of the session and we learned a lot from the run, so we're happy with that."
Pro qualifying wraps up with two sessions (11a.m. and 2 p.m.) on Saturday. Final eliminations will start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Herbert said there was still some more room for improvement with the performance of the car.
"The track is so good, I think it actually bogged the motor down this time," Herbert said. "But the track is so good, it's tempting to try and throw everything you have at it. The good thing is that it will still be in great shape tomorrow."
Herbert earned the Pomona Raceway victory during the 2001 summer event celebrating the NHRA 50th anniversary. He was runner-up to Scott Kalitta at the first of 23 events this season and is looking to be on the wining end of the finals this time.
"This team has been working overtime to be ready for this event," Herbert said. "We have been to four final rounds this season and I know we have the crew, the tuner and the car to make it No. 5 this weekend. We're qualified fifth so who knows, maybe that could be our lucky number this weekend."
All the action can be seen on ESPN2 starting with the qualifying at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. NHRA 2Day will air at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday followed by the eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) that evening.
