Herbert Goes to Quarterfinals; Finishes Eighth in Points
Doug Herbert advanced to the quarterfinals in this weekend's Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals from the Auto Club Raceway. This event marks the end of the 'For My Boys' Tour for Herbert, who finishes the 2008 season eighth in the NHRA POWERade Championship Top Fuel point standings.
Herbert, the No. 10 qualifier, faced Morgan Lucas, the No. 7 qualifier in Round 1. It was a tight race until the 660-ft. mark when Herbert's dragster pulled ahead. Herbert and his team advanced to the second round, defeating Lucas 3.928 to 3.986. This marked the team's 13th Round 1 win this season.
For Round 2 of eliminations Herbert was matched against Larry Dixon, who qualified second and advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Clay Millican. Herbert beat Dixon off the line but his dragster slowed due to a mechanical failure. Dixon was able to drive around Herbert to get the win and advance to the semifinals.
"I hate that we went out because of a part failure but that's drag racing," said Herbert, 10-time NHRA winner. "You never know what's going to happen out here and that's part of what makes this sport so exciting. I'm glad we scored another top-10 points finish and I'm proud of my crew for all they've done this year. Everything has been for my boys this year and I hope that I've made them proud."
"We have a lot to do over the off season to make sure we're back out here in Pomona in February," said NHRA veteran Herbert. "The future of the team is a bit uncertain because we don't have a sponsor yet for the 2009 season. I have a lot of good things going on with the car we're building to set the world land speed record and the B.R.A.K.E.S. teen safe driving organization I founded in honor of my boys. I'm certain that I'd be a great representative for a company that could take advantage of everything I have to offer. I feel like something will come together for next year and I'd like to thank Snap-on for their support over the past 16 years."
