MCCLENATHAN LOCKS IN NO. 5 IN POMONA FINALS QUALIFYING
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2010) - Cory McClenathan, No. 3 in the point standings, earned fifth place in Top Fuel qualifying for the 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, posting his quickest pass of 3.848-seconds at 318.32 mph in his final attempt to earn those valuable qualifying bonus points. He collected one of those points in the third round, when he recorded a 3.935/268.49 (No. 5).
His other laps were a 3.853/317.87 (No. 4), and a 4.553/166.48 (No. 4). Racing the FRAM Top Fuel dragster, he will face T.J. Zizzo in Sunday's opening stanza, with a chance to meet his Don Schumacher Racing teammate and No. 2 in points Tony Schumacher in the semifinal round. Entering eliminations, McClenathan is 31 points behind Schumacher, and 113 back of leader Larry Dixon.
"Running the 3.84 in the last run was good," said McClenathan. "Those conditions were good to run in the 3.70s and my teammate (Schumacher) ran in the .70s (3.794/322.88). So, I think (crew chiefs) Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) and everybody on the FRAM team were kind of like, 'It's a great run but it's not where we should be running.'
"It certainly didn't put us in the place we wanted to be qualifying-wise, and we're missing out on a whole bunch of small points right now. Tony is two full two rounds ahead of us.
"We have to go out and do well tomorrow, either way. We have a good hot-weather tune-up. The car was on a good run earlier today, but we had to abort the run. Everybody is a little scared of the oil down fees, so we're just being smart.
"Tomorrow is for all the points. We'll see how it all plays out. It should be nice and warm out there, the track will be good, but lane choice will be critical."
