FINAL RACE OF TASCA'S ROOKIE SEASON
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2008) -- A blur. That is probably the best way that Rookie-of-the-Year nominee, Bob Tasca III, can describe his first season in the ultra-competitive NHRA Funny Car class. With his race team nearing its one-year mark, it's been a long and busy road for the driver and team owner to get to the final race of the 2008 season.
"It's hard to believe that it's already the final race of the year," said the driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang. "This season has been quite an experience, and to look from where we started at just about a year ago to where we are today, we've got an awful lot of confidence about where this program is heading. I'm just amazed to be a part of this final race this weekend. Pomona is a prestigious race and certainly one that you kind of envision throughout the season as far as how the championship is going to play out and who is going to win."
Even though the rookie driver sits 12th in the championship standings, Tasca knows that every driver competing on Sunday could have some influence on how the championship unfolds.
"Even if you're not vying for the championship, all 16 cars that race on Sunday will have a profound impact on the outcome of this championship," said Tasca. "And that is just a tribute to the level of competition and the level of teams that compete in this class, and it's going to be neat to be a part of."
With the four qualifying runs for the weekend spread out over three days rather than the normal two, the rookie driver and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team will face similar racing conditions for three out of the four qualifying runs down the track.
"I'll make a prediction; there's going to be some huge runs out there this weekend," said Tasca . "Pomona is notorious for record-setting conditions, particularly at the finals. I think you're going to see some monster runs. With the runs being around the same time of the day, it's going to allow the crew chiefs to really dial it in for this weekend and we're going to see some really exciting racing. And with how close this championship is, you're going to see some pretty exciting first-round match-ups on Sunday."
