Mopar Dodge Avenger Driver Johnson Seizes Fourth Straight No. 1 at Pomona
Pomona, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2010) -- Another race, another No. 1 spot for Mopar Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson. The Team Mopar veteran powered to his fourth straight No. 1 Qualifier position and eighth of the season in the final qualifying session today at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Johnson will attempt to earn his fifth final-round appearance and second victory of the year in eliminations tomorrow.
Johnson barely edged out fellow Mopar-powered Dodge Avenger driver V. Gaines to earn his 15th career No. 1 award. Gaines clocked a 6.551-second run at 210.83 mph to claim the provisional No. 1 on Friday, with Johnson second on the charts. A.J. matched Gaines' 6.551 elapsed time in his last qualifying attempt today but was able to take over the top spot with his faster speed of 211.43 mph.
"We were able to get back in that left lane and make a pretty near perfect run," said Johnson. "That's how it's been the last four races. Hopefully tomorrow we can make really good runs every run and keep lane choice. That's big here.
"Taking the No. 1 spot four straight times to end the season, it just gives you so much confidence. I feel confident we can get the win tomorrow if we can keep lane choice. The right lane just gives us a fit every time, that's why it was so huge for us to qualify well here and be able to pick the best lane."
Johnson continues to battle through a 60 percent tear in his bicep tendon, suffered earlier this week as he attempted to move a stack of chairs at his home in Greeneville, Tenn.
"It hurts a little bit," Johnson said. "We're going to go out there and try to win this race for Mopar. I'll endure a little bit of pain while shifting and try to get that Mopar in winner's circle."
Johnson will square off with Bob Yonke in the opening stanza tomorrow. Gaines will go heads-up against Warren Johnson, while No. 7 qualifier and Dodge Avenger pilot Vinnie Deceglie will see Ronnie Humphrey in round one.
Mopar-powered Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car driver and No. 4 qualifier Matt Hagan will face Bob Tasca III in the first round as he attempts to nail down his first Funny Car title and the first for a Mopar-powered driver since Gary Scelzi brought home the 2005 championship. Hagan holds a 38-point lead over 14-time Funny Car champion John Force heading into the final day of the season tomorrow.
