POMONA, Calif., Nov. 12, 2000 - Doug Herbert finished the 2000 NHRA season on a good note, advancing to the semifinals of the Auto Club Finals at Pomona Raceway before bowing out until the 2001 campaign begins.
In the final analysis, Herbert 's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster beat Doug Kalitta in the first round (4.918 at 294.69 to 10.440 at 85.60) and David Grubnic in the quarterfinals on a hole shot (4.904 at 301.33 to 4.894 at 278.35). Herbert 's reaction time was .489 to Grubnic's .507.
That wasn't the only time Herbert made a good reaction time pay off. His .432 during qualifying was the best among the Top Fuel drivers and earned him a $1500 bonus and several free nights lodging from Red Roof Inn.
Tony Schumacher ended Herbert's season in the semifinals with a 4.715 at 270.59 to Herbert's tire smoking 9.795 at 100.82.
"We did a lot better here this year than we did last year," said Herbert, who failed to qualify for the 1999 Finals. "I am glad the season is over."
Herbert, who began eliminations from the 14th spot (4.732 at 313.51), finished ninth overall with 963 points.
"We plan to make some changes during the winter and come out swinging for next year," Herbert added. His next event is the Winternationals, 80 days from how, Feb. 1-4, also at Pomona Raceway.
