Pomona, Calif. (Pre-Race) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, arrives in Pomona, Calif. for the running of the 15th Annual Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals with one single-minded goal; to win the race.
It was back in September that Whisnant and his RW Performance team set a goal; to end the season in the top ten in the Winston Pro Stock Truck points. To date the team has fought tooth and nail to gain the points that would put them back in the top ten. Coming into this race Whisnant is tied for 12th (with Taylor Lastor) and 96 points away from tenth position. So, it is do or die for Whisnant when he takes to the asphalt in Pomona. He will have to go to the final round in eliminations to achieve his top ten goal.
"It's pretty simple," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "We have to get to the final this weekend to move around (John) Lingenfelter and (Larry) Seay. We have to win or runner-up this weekend to achieve our goal and finish out the season on a high note.
"That goal really isn't so far out of sight. I think we have a good chance to win here, as good of a chance as anyone else.
"We have only made one run on the truck since Memphis, that was in Dallas last weekend without having any qualifying runs. Without any track time, we were pretty much taking a shot in the dark. You have to have data on the track to tune these trucks, and get the most out of every run. We did not have the track time in Dallas and it didn't work out very well for us.
"The good news is that we have good data on the racetrack in Pomona. We ran well here at the last race in February. We will take a look at that data and our notes from the last time we raced here. All that should help us make set up the truck, and better runs here this weekend. We believe that we have the horsepower and the truck. If we use our heads and race smart, I really believe that we could get to the final round.
"Even if we don't get back into the top ten, I would like to end the season on a high note. This team has worked hard all year. We started out good and have had some disappointing moments along the way. The last part of this season we have been on an upswing. It is too bad that we have run out of time. I think that if we had a couple more races we could have gotten back in the top ten.
"I would like to have a good race here. At the very least, to end the season on a high note. That would be a good way to say thank you to my team for all their hard work and dedication. My Dad (Reid Whisnant), my brother Terry Whisnant, Brent Malone, my wife Gina, and everybody who has helped us this season; I wouldn't be here without them. I would like to win here in Pomona for them."
Qualifying at the 15th Annual Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals begins on Thursday Nov. 9, and continues Friday Nov. 10 and Saturday Nov. 11. Eliminations will take place on Sunday Nov. 12 at 11:00 AM PST. k
