POMONA, Calif. -- Doug Herbert opened the 2005 NHRA POWERade season with a top five performance Thursday at Pomona Raceway.

Herbert made a 4.581-second pass at 264.18 mph in the Snap-on Dragster to sit in the top half of the qualifying ladder after the first of four sessions.

"We got down the track and when you're at the first race of the season making the first pass of the season, that's important," Herbert said. "I think it was a great way to start This is a positive start to what is going to be a positive season. I'm excited."

Herbert will continue the busy weekend with one qualifying sessions on Friday followed by two more on Saturday. Final eliminations for the season-opening Winternationals are set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday.

Besides racing, Herbert will also play host to seven active duty Marines. There will be several honorary pit members at a number of NHRA national events this season. All of the guests will be active Marines, home from overseas combat deployment. Herbert's Pomona guests will arrive Saturday morning.

"All of the Marines that will be joining us this year have served combat missions," Herbert said. "They are out there fighting for us and this is our way to let them know we support them and we're real glad they made a safe return home. I want everyone at the races to stop by the Snap-on pit on Saturday and tell these guys how much we appreciate what they do for all of us in this country."
