RAIN CANCELS FRIDAY'S ACTION AT POMONA

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2005) -- Persistent rain showers that blanketed Southern California forced NHRA officials to cancel Friday's scheduled professional qualifying session at Pomona Raceway. Wet conditions caused a one-week delay of the season-opening Winternationals one year ago.

Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite team opened qualifying Thursday in the No. 16 qualifying position. Dixon is a three-time Winternationals (1998, 2002-03) winner and his 35 career victories ranks third all-time in the Top Fuel category.

"I'm thinking we should run the U.S. Nationals Labor Day weekend in Pomona (Calif.) and run the Winternationals in Indy in February, then maybe we could get it off" Dixon said. "It's nice back home in Indy. I'm sure nobody is happy about this. Everybody wants to make runs and gather data, but you can't fight Mother Nature."

Dixon and company will return to the storied Southern California drag strip Saturday when qualifying is slated for noon and 3 p.m. (PT). Dixon and his Dick LaHaie-led race crew aim for a spot in the top half of the qualifying order on Saturday as the So Cal native eyes a fourth career Winternationals victory.
