POMONA, Calif. -- With his jet-black Henkelman & Baca Motorsports Top Fuel Dragster featuring the newly acquired American Racing Custom Wheels logo, second generation drag racer David Baca claimed the 10th qualifying spot for this weekend's NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals, the season-opening event on the 2003 NHRA POWERADE ® Drag Racing Series.

With crew chief Johnny West handling the tuning duties, Baca's pass of 4.657 seconds at 248.62 mph, recorded in Friday's only session, put the Brentwood, Calif. driver in the field for tomorrow's eliminations. The 4.657 second elapsed time is a career best.

"It sure is nice to be here, play with the best of the best and actually make the show," said Baca. "We're feeling real good about ourselves. The first qualifying run was not as good as we hoped. The second was real good. Popped the parachute a little early. Johnny (West) jumped on it both times today. We thought it was going to hold. Obviously it didn't. Bottom line is that you've got to be in to win. Tomorrow's a new day. Bring them on. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"We representing American Racing Wheels here this weekend and would like nothing better than to but this American Racing Wheels Dragster in the winner's circle. Stranger things have happened. A rookie has won here before. We're going to go out and do the best we can."

Baca will face Doug Herbert, from Cherryville, N.C. in tomorrow's opening round of eliminations. Herbert qualified seventh with a pass of 4.611 seconds at 312.35 mph.

Session #1 Thursday: 5.084 seconds at 210.34 mph (#10)

Session #3 Saturday: 11.677 seconds at 79.00 mph (#9)
