POMONA, Calif., Feb. 12, 2005 - Mechanical gremlins struck David Baca Saturday during each of his two qualifying runs for Sunday's 45th annual CarQuest Winternationals at Pomona Raceway.

After a steady rain washed out Friday's scheduled qualifying run, Baca and the Baca Motorsports team were ready Saturday. He was third going into the opening session, thanks to his 4.502-second, 329.42-mph effort.

But a broken blower belt prematurely ended Saturday's first pass. "It was a good run until then," said Baca. "We pitched the belt at 4.2 seconds and we think it could've run a 4.48.

"We had a clutch malfunction on the last run," he continued. "We didn't get very far from the starting line. It's very rare something like that happens to us and it wasn't the way we wanted to end qualifying. Who would've thought a 4.50 would've been eighth. But conditions were very good for the last run. It was a shame we missed that opportunity."

Baca squares off against Doug Herbert, the No. 9 qualifier (4.503 at 328.06 mph) in Sunday's first round.

"We'll be ready to go," concluded the Brentwood, Calif., driver.
