Grubnic gains momentum in testing; Looks forward to promising 2005 NHRA season

Pomona, Calif., Feb. 7, 2005 - When the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series ended last November at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif., Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel driver "Aussie Dave" Grubnic finished the best season of his 10-year career, he displayed the colors of a new primary sponsor, and he walked onto the awards banquet stage fifth in the final championship points tally.

As the 2005 NHRA Drag Racing season roars to life in Pomona again this weekend at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, Feb. 10-13, the scenery for the 42-year old native Australian dragster pilot is similar, but the attitude and competitive fire of Grubnic and his nitro team are even more optimistic and as intense as ever.

Entering his sophomore season with Kalitta Motorsports in 2005, Grubnic, the 2004 Budweiser Shootout winner, is excited about his prospects for the 2005 racing season after driving his black and bright blue-flamed, 7,000 + horsepower rail to a run of 4.552 seconds, 321.88 mph to lead Top Fuel testing at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this past weekend. He is also excited about his team's partnership with primary sponsor Zantrex-3 that carried over into this season after beginning in the final two events last year.

"We had great tests this off-season, both in Phoenix and in Las Vegas," Grubnic said. "The car is really solid and so are all my Zantrex-3 crew guys. I think we are going to be a threat to win the championship from the very start. Connie (Kalitta, team owner and crew chief) and Jon (Oberhofer, co-crew chief) have got a great handle on things, so I'm ready to get in the car and go racing.

"It's great to have Zantrex-3 on board with us for the whole season too. What a great group of people. Their commitment to us and our sport is terrific. I am very grateful and thrilled to be driving for them."

Grubnic is a journeyman Top Fuel racer who entered his first event at the 1995 NHRA Winternationals. In 2004, he began driving for legendary team owner and crew chief Connie "the Bounty Hunter" Kalitta in, what was initially, a research and development vehicle. The team's plan of research and development for the car changed in the middle stages of the year when Grubnic and his team became more competitive for the Top Fuel championship.

Legendary drag racer and auto racing pioneer Shirley Muldowney will serve as the team and sponsor relations representative for the Zantrex-3 racing team.

The CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals begins Thursday for the Top Fuel class with one qualifying session. Another qualifying session follows on Friday, with two scheduled for Saturday. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations.

The CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals is the first of 23 national events in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
