Pomona, Calif. - With more than a decade passing since he climbed into his first nitro funny car, former NHRA world champion driver Cruz Pedregon will, once again, take to the staging lanes this weekend at Pomona Raceway to compete at the K & N Filters Winternationals. Making his jump from the ESPN broadcast booth back to the race track in 2002, Cruz Pedregon made his debut season with Advance Auto Parts as car owner and driver. Now, as the 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season opens, Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team are ready to begin their sophomore season at the southern California race track.
With the team making many new improvements and enhancements during the winter season, including the addition of a new shop location in Indianapolis, Cruz Pedregon has assembled an experienced crew that will prove competitive during the new season.
"In all my years of racing, I can honestly say that I have never been more excited than I am right now, going into the 2003 season," comments Cruz Pedregon. "Almost every aspect of the team has been improved with some sort of new program - from mechanical additions to new sponsorships. We are in a good position and its only getting better."
As one of the few drivers to win this event in three different categories- Top Alcohol Dragster '89, Top Alcohol Funny Car '90, and Nitro Funny Car in 1995 with the Joe Gibbs Racing Team - Cruz Pedregon hopes to repeat similar victories this weekend. Less than three months ago at the NHRA Finals, also held at the Pomona facility, the Advance Auto Parts Racing team made their way into the quarter-finals after taking out Whit Bazemore during the first round. Looking back further, Cruz holds a total of four pole positions - as low qualifier, and has made his way into the final round as many as three times at Pomona Raceway.
The K & N Filters Winternationals is the first of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Pomona Raceway will play host to the event taking place February 6-9, 2003. Nitro qualifying sessions begin at 3:00 pm on Thursday afternoon. Final Eliminations will begin on Sunday at 11:00 am, just after opening ceremonies. Cash and Contingency prizes will be awarded in excess of $2 million dollars at the event.
