POMONA, Calif. (February 12, 2005) -- With a record-setting field, the quickest in NHRA history, Top Fuel driver Cory McClenathan qualified No. 11 at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals, being contested this weekend at Pomona Raceway on the grounds of the L.A. County Fairplex.

In the single qualifying session on Thursday, McClenathan put the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog dragster in the top half of the field at No. 8 when he recorded an elapsed time of 4.616 seconds. Mother Nature gained the upper hand during Friday's lone qualifying session which was washed out by persistent rains.

With the rains gone, McClenathan lower his elapsed time and held onto the No. 8 spot when he ran 4.521 seconds at 327.59 mph in the first of two Saturday passes. In the final pass of qualifying, Cory Mac was forced to abort the run.

"During that final qualifying run, we didn't have enough throttle opening and overheated the clutch during the burnout," said crew chief Todd Smith. "The downside is that it dropped us out of the top half of the field. The upside is that it is an easy fix and the FRAM AirHog dragster will be ready for tomorrow."

McClenathan will take on Larry Dixon in the opening round tomorrow. Dixon qualified No. 6 with a E.T. of 4.481 seconds.
