Bruce Litton Falls Short In Qualifying At The Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals

POMONA, CA.- Bruce Litton has been drag racing long enough to know that this high-horsepower sport can force a competitor to draw on both ends of the emotional spectrum. Such was the case for the Indianapolis, Ind.-based, Top Fuel driver as he failed to qualify for the final event on the NHRA/Winston tour of the 1999 season. Litton fell to the bump spot during the final session in qualifying, improved his status, and then subsequently got bumped when the next pair of fueler ran at the 35th annual, Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.

The Wix Filters-backed driver began the second day of qualifications ranked 12th among 25 entries in attendance at the Pomona Raceway-hosted even. Litton provided a conservative effort in his third qualifying attempt when blasted down the quarter-mile with a 4.797/297.09, which produced a slight bit of tire haze in the traps. His failure to improve during that session, and the good fortunes of two other competitors, dropped Litton to the 14th spot.

Litton knew that his run wasn't going to hold; however, it held up until he had the opportunity to run and he bettered his previous mark with a 4.739/303.43. He lowered the mark, but when the next pair rain, Litton's lap was bettered and he was relegated to first alternate status.
