ANTRON BROWN RACES TO NO. 12 SPOT THURSDAY AT POMONA
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2010) - Antron Brown opened the 2010 NHRA season Thursday afternoon by coasting his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools dragster to a lap of 8.361 seconds at 76.03 mph. Brown, who won a category-best six races last season, has three qualifying runs remaining at the 50th annual Winternationals.
The NHRA professionals only run on Thursday at the two Pomona races in February and November. The Matco Tools/U.S. Army team took to the historic Pomona track at 5:38 p.m. (PT) on Thursday as Brown's Matco Tools/Valvoline car lost traction and slowed to the 8.361-second elapsed time. There are three qualifying runs remaining. Brown's DSR teammate Cory McClenathan qualified first on Thursday in the FRAM dragster with a pass of 3.809 at 320.05, while seven-time Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher was seventh in the U.S. Army dragster after clocking a run of 4.056 at 206.99. The three DSR Funny Cars finished fifth, Jack Beckman (4.101), sixth, Matt Hagan (4.109), and 15th, Ron Capps (8.725), on Thursday.
"We just underestimated the track a little bit," Brown said. "It was a lot better than we thought and we shook the tires. It's all good. We'll come back out on Friday and Saturday and hit it hard."
Professional nitro qualifying is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday with Top Fuel followed by Funny Car. Brown has earned the No. 1 qualifying award at the Winternationals the last two seasons and collected seven poles last season, second best in Top Fuel.
