ANTRON BROWN RACES MATCO TOOLS RAIL TO QUARTERFINALS AT WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 14, 2010) - Antron Brown drove his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona to complete the season-opening 50th annual Winternationals for the 24-time NHRA winner.

Brown, who qualified 11th on Saturday with an elapsed time of 3.869-seconds, defeated young gun Steve Torrence before falling to teammate and seven-time champion Tony Schumacher in the second round.

Brown, who maded his Top Fuel debut at the historic Pomona track two seasons ago, used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power the Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a solid opening-round win. The Matco/Valvoline car powered to a wire-to-wire win with a lap of 3.883 seconds at 314.61 mph to Torrence's slightly slower run of 3.897 at 310.98. Brown is now 3-0 against Torrence. Squaring off against Top Fuel's winningest driver for the 16th time, Brown used a slight starting line advantage to race the Matco-backed rail to the early lead, but Brown's blue dragster smoked the tires and slowed to a run of 4.535 at 196.99. Schumacher sped to a solid run of 3.923 at 302.69 to march into the semifinals. Brown, who was 6-2 against the U.S. Army car last season, is now 7-9 against "the Sarge."

"That was a tough one," Brown said. "The Sarge and that U.S. Army team is the best and we really want to beat those guys. They have what we want and that's the championship. I'm always amped up to race Tony (Schumacher). We were just a little too aggressive. The track wasn't as good as the opening round as you can see by some guys falling off with their times, but we got passed the first round and we'll head to Phoenix and put on a good show for all our Matco distributors and soliders for the U.S. Army."

The next NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event is the 26th annual Arizona Nationals, Feb. 19-21, at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz. near Phoenix. Brown is the defending event champion of the Phoenix race.
