SCHUMACHER TAKES SECOND STARTING SPOT

CHANDLER, Ariz., February 21 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher will come out of the second starting position here Sunday in the Lucas Slick Mist Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

The six-time world champion used a 3.826-second run at 314.46 mph in the last qualifying session to move around his former U.S. Army Racing teammate, Antron Brown, in the final race day order. Larry Dixon collected the number one spot.

"With the track heating up a bit today, that was a great effort by Mike Green (his crew chief) and the guys," said Schumacher. "We definitely have a car that's more than capable of winning the race."

Schumacher will confront 15th-place qualifier, Troy Buff, in the opening round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. MT.

"I can't wait to get back out here tomorrow," said the Chicago-area resident.

"We're going to be completely focused on getting by Troy. That's the only order of business we're concerned with right now."

Schumacher, who lost in the second round at the season opener in Pomona, Calif. two weeks ago, is eager to add to his Firebird victory total. He leads the Top Fuel ranks with three career wins.

"This has been a good track for me over the years," he offered. "I'd like nothing better than to return to victory lane tomorrow." Schumacher entered round two of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series tied for fifth-place in the Top Fuel standings.
