"THE SARGE" JUMPS INTO THIRD

CHANDLER, Ariz., February 20 - Piloting his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher swiped the third starting position here Friday following the first day of qualifying for the Lucas Slick Mist Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Schumacher's 3.840-second pass at 315.27 mph in the second session moved him into the top three just behind Larry Dixon and Antron Brown, respectively.

"Yet again, we bolted right down the track with ease," said the defending world champion. "I'm really impressed with the way this U.S. Army team is performing. Even though we have two more qualifying sessions tomorrow, I'm already excited about race day."

A three-time winner at Firebird, Schumacher wants to make amends for a second round loss in the season opener two weeks ago.

"The guys are determined to do well here this weekend," said the Chicago-area resident. "We had two terrific runs today which allows us to work on a race day set up on Saturday."

Schumacher's initial pass of 3.849-seconds at 314.39 mph was nearly identical to his late afternoon 1,000-foot trip.

"Mike Green (his crew chief) has a good handle on the race car," he added.

"We're right there in the mix with the boys at the top."

Top Fuel qualifying sessions on Saturday are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
