JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES SKOAL RACING CHEVY IN NO. 12 POSITION AT PHOENIX

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 24, 2006) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. qualified Don Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car in the No. 12 position Saturday at Firebird International Raceway after recording a qualifying-best pass of 4.780-seconds.

Johnson's best run of qualifying came on his opening attempt when his Mike Green-tuned Monte Carlo blistered the Firebird Raceway quarter mile in 4.780 seconds at 315.71 mph. It was the third quickest pass of the opening qualifying session. The Skoal Racing flopper lost traction on both of Saturday's qualifying efforts to finish in the No. 12 slot.

"I think we had a bad set of tires," Johnson said. "We had a tire vibration during the burnout on Saturday's first run, so we came back and balanced the tires and it went out and smoked the tires in almost the same place. I don't think Mike (Green) needs to change the tune-up; we need to put a different set of tires on the car. We had a set of tires that didn't agree with our tune-up. I'm confident we can have a car like we had on Friday."

The Iowa native will match up against No. 5 qualifier and 2005 NHRA Rookie of the Year Robert Hight in the first round of Funny Car eliminations at 11 a.m. (MT) on Sunday morning.
